Chapter 15

The Laws of the Jade Empire

Interlude

“I demand to know which of the Jade Magisters requested a demon for training,” the Air priestess said very harshly.

If Koga hadn’t been a seasoned official with more than one political war under his belt, he would have been sweating like a turkey before Thanksgiving. Only a very powerful or a very stupid person would argue with the temple representatives. He was very aware of the thoughts circling their heads and so he tried to minimize the Abode’s losses the best he could. No matter what happened, he’d remain loyal to his masters until the end, but he had to make sure that this never left his office. Whatever happened in the Abode stayed in the Abode. It was a good thing that the Guardsman slayed the demon; otherwise, it was anyone’s guess how the ceremony could have ended. Thoughts flashed through his mind. With an impenetrable face, the senior official nodded and took out the already prepared documents.

“I’m afraid that we will have to conduct a full investigation. Judging by the data I have, it had been brought here by the previous head. There is a high chance that someone masked it as a human and forged its documents.”

“I hope you are aware of how that looks from our point of view. Will our abbots be able to trust you on the day the Gates open?” The Water priest spoke as calmly as always but only a complete fool would believe his tranquility. A perceptive person, and Koga was just that, could see the tattoos on the priest’s fingers that marked him as a member of one of the most radical groups of warrior monks. Just like the sea itself, Gonggong’s followers hid their tempest nature underneath serenity.

“I understand your concern. However, an Energy Eater would have perished underneath the amount of power you four would have fed it.”

“Of course it would have, but that’s not the point of this conversation.”

“Of course not,” Koga agreed with a nod. He didn’t like the interruption, but there was no need to escalate the conflict further, so he just let the priest speak. “I assure you that no one would have been hurt. The plan was foolproof.”

“And that reckless Guardsman?” the Earth priest inquired. “Yang Wu, was it? Who is responsible for his transfer?”

“He and Mei-Li Liang were recommended for enrollment by Lady Takeshi Kumiho. They were trained as Guardsmen as per request of her sister, Lady Takeshi Hotaru.” While he wasn’t a Crane himself, Koga had long since mastered the art of keeping his emotions in check. As a simple quan from a poor family, he had to adapt and learn to survive to keep his position. And all this under the command of Oshida Kan, a man hated for his integrity by his own clansmen and relatives. Kan didn’t have many friends, so Koga was probably the only person in the entire great Jade Empire who sincerely grieved for his master and mentor. “Despite their young age, the two have already assisted the Jade Office.
